The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
