Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
