Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
